Australian Fauna

Okay, I'm not going to profess to know everything about Aussie fauna, but I do get asked what certain animals/marsupials/mammals, look like.  So instead of trying to describe the different ones, here're some pix I gleaned from Arribavista - thanks to Chelle.   (What would I do with out you girl?)

For a larger view of the different photo's, just click on the pix themselves (Karen crosses her fingers here and hope's to the Almighty she has them all correct!)

Hope this answers some questions, and if I haven't go and visit the site I pinched the pix from.   When there you simply type in the name of the animal you wish to see, and when the thumbnail appears, just click on it. Not only will you receive a larger photo on you browser, but also information about each animal.

This site is recommended for anyone who's child/ren are doing school projects!

Kangaroo

Tie me Kangaroo down sport...tie me kangaroo down.
Tie me kangaroo down sport...tie me kangaroo down!
  All together now!

I'm sure _most_ of you have at least seen a kangaroo.   Here's one with a Joey in its pouch!  'Nuff said about the roo.... oh... 'cept one thing....... they make a hell of a mess if the jump on your car.

Koala

'How much can a koala bare?'
- Austen Tayshus

Ok... now for all you Yanks and Rebs *G* out there, this is a Koala! Just that...a KOALA.   No bear!  Not even a little one. Koala's are marsupials, not mammals, so there is no relationship to bears.  Cute? yes.... Cuddly?....debatable......LOL.

Wombat

Eats...roots.....and .... leaves!

Ok, this here is a wombat..... (now you know BarryBear *G*).   Bit like a Koala that doesn't climb trees. They can grow to almost 4 foot long, and can also, like the 'roo, make a helluva mess of your car!   And they growl really loud too!  Had a white one at Mum and Dad's farm, that was very aggressive!

Possum

"Hello Possums!"
- Dame Edna Everage

Okies, I'm sure you have all heard, seen or smelt a possum?   No, okay, they are cute like the Koala....but for goodness sake don't try and cuddle one, unless its a ringtail and really small.  Coz they have very sharp claws!

Quokka

Hubby: "What do Quokka's who get up really early in the morning say?"
"Quokka-a doodle-doo!"

This here's a Quokka....unfortunately the name isn't long enough to score a double and triple in a game of Scrabble.  But, once again, cute and ....cuddly????

Emu

"Here's a story, yeah it's true,
About an Old Man Emu.
he can't fly - but I'm telling you,
He can run the pants off a kangaroo!"
- John Williamson

(I think!)

Can't remember who wrote the song, if you know, please email me, and I can put up the credit.  Ta!

Very tall bird(?), when I was at Puckapunyal Army Base, we'd wake in the morning to find Emu's all over the base, and heaps of tiny ones too.

The babies when hatched can be as tall as your knee, assuming of course you are 5'6" like me! *G*

Platypus

How do you plat a puss?
I'm not telling! *G*

Okies, bit of a duck, bit of a seal, bit of everything, and no one really knows much about them, 'cept they have a real sting in their tail.

Tasmanian Devil

Looks absolutely nothing like what you see in the cartoons!

This is the Tazzie Devil, Tasmanian Devil.  He looks ferociously and I sure wouldn't go near one.   Can you see the teeth on this one!

Frilled Neck Lizard

This is the Frilled Neck Lizard, which lives in outback Australia. Usually the "frill" is kept hidden, but when alarmed it will 'fluff' out as the lizard runs on its toes.  Fantastic to watch!

Can grow up to 1 metre tall, on long spindly legs!

Kookaburra

Kookaburra sits in the old Gum Tree,
Merry Merry King of the bush is he.....
Laugh Kookaburra laugh,
Kookaburra gay your life must be!

An old camp fire song about the strange 'laugh' emitted by the Kookaburra.   They can grow quite large, and some are tameable.   Used to hand feed one when I lived in Sydney during the Army days.

They are a hunter and live on mice, rats, snakes, anything small they can swoop on and eat! But their laugh is infectious!

Cockatoo

Hello Cocky!

This is our cockatoo, well not mine but Australia's.  The Sulphur Crested Cockatoo - the bain of the Aussie farmer. During the fruit season this little Varmint can be found pecking at any fruit that a farmer hasn't covered in bird netting.  Also known to peck and chew away your wooden window frames!

Budgie

This here is a Budgie!  Very few of the US cits' I know - actually know what a Budgie is...so here's a pic! or two! I have one like the pic on the right. But they come in many different colours. And they sound wonderful on a summers day, twittering and tweeting outside my dining room window!

Redback Spider

There was a redback on the toilet seat,
when I was there last night,
I know I didn't see him,
But I sure did feel his bite!
- Have no idea???

This is the female Redback spider.  And no, I didn't go looking between her legs! The female is the more venomous of the two, and she is the one who wears the bright red lippy on her back! The male of the variety is just a 'plain Jane'. A nasty bite, which needs medical treatment.  Can be deadly, depending on how soon treatment is received.

Tiger Snake

Eeeeeeewwww  Yukkiessssss!

I've never been a fan of snakes, of any variety, and a walk thru the reptile house at the zoo leaves me cold. Have seen a couple at close quarters ( not Tiger) whilst up at mum and dads farm, not a pleasant experience. Even went hunting snakes, ala Elma Fudd with Dad once when a King Cobra jumped up and bit his 4WD.

Wallaby

Watch me wallaby stew, Stu.
Watch me wallaby stew.

A smaller version of the Kangaroo.  Smaller, stockier, but with the same/similar features. Don't think I've ever seen one in the wild, and don't even think I'd be able to tell the diff if I did. *G*
