Mornington
Mornington is an hours drive, or 50klm from
Melbourne, down the east side of Port Philip Bay. It was founded in 1860 as a fishing village and farming land,
but now boasts a sizeable township and even a racecourse.

We arrived in Mornington in September 1974, after emigrating from Liverpool (UK). (Neither my three brothers
nor I have any trace of English accent now. Two weeks of teasing was all it took for me to gain a dinky-di
aussie accent.) I was almost 10 years old when we moved here, and the place had changed dramatically in that time.
I met my first 'aussie' boyfriend a few months after we arrived - the joke was - he was Irish! The bigger joke was - we
eventually got married. And we are still together almost 16 years, and three children later.
Hubby and kids will be appearing on the site soon. They just have to choose the pics I can use - **rolls eyes** -
well I figure if I can bear to put up a semi - recent pic of me, then they shouldn't be too choosy. I have quite a 'cute' family.
Anyway - back to the subject at hand -- Mornington.
Trying to think of something to say about Mornington - I thought - would be easy. After all I have spent 26 years here
now and know the place quite well. Well - my problem is where to start? The pic above is one of the Shire promotional shots,
and is taken just outside the post office in the middle of Main Street. The bottom of Main Street, if you follow it all the
way, ends at the end of the Mornington Pier, of course the street name changes at the roundabout to Schnapper Point Drive.
Mornington's western border is all beach. Driving down Schnapper Point Drive, you'll pass the "Boat Park" so called because
of the adventure playground in one corner, dominated by a huge wooden sailing ship that the kids climb all over. There is also an
obelisk monument there commemorating the loss of the whole Mornington Football team, who were lost earlier this century when
returning from a football match at Mordialloc (halfway around the bay to Melbourne). They had sailed to the match because it had
been a pleasant days outing. Unfortunately the ship foundered on its return trip and all aboard drowned - including three brothers.
Another monument was erected on high ground overlooking the Pier, this monument is a statue of Mathew Flinders, one of the first
people to circumnavigate Australia. He looks out to sea from his vantage point.

On most of the beaches in Mornington you will find the old Bathing Boxes that most families maintained earlier this century, although these
days most people wear their bathing clothes to and from the beach, most who now own the bathing boxes use them for storage of beach
activities equipment, eg: surfboards, boogie boards, boats, canoes, paddleboards etc.
For anyone visiting our town, or even considering moving here - here are a few of the attractions available, as well as sporting clubs.
Not all are mentioned here, as for those who may not know me - I am not into sports! *G*
